Literature Text

Omaha

I picture you–
shoulders hunched over
piles of books,
words crawling across
each page.
Like lines of tiny black ants.
Piano music caresses
the still air,
lilting lyrics cry out
to fill the silence.

You are tired.

You march on.

I picture you–
a different time.
We believed in each other's
words.
I marveled at the way they
flew
from your mouth with
ease.
"It takes practice,"
you'd say.

We were inspired.

We spoke 'til dawn.

I picture you–
this time, writing.
Harnessing the worlds you love,
making them your own.
Some passions never die,
and this one keeps you sane
in a land of law, order,
and justice.
Controlled chaos is yours,
and I await each new tale.

You remember me and close your eyes.

I recite poetry until you return.

Written about a friend of mine, who until recently was living in Omaha and going to law school. She's come back for the summer now. I actually wrote this for a project her mom is undertaking, and I don't really like it. Probably because I don't think the poem does her justice. But...

critique anyway, plz.

I like it. We are our own worst critics, though, eh?
